White cossacks from Neumann (Belgium)

This white army cossack composite figure was produced by a Belgian manufacture - Neumann in 30s. Neumann made composite figures for a quite limited time period in the middle of 30s. The company released nice sets of mountain troops : Alpine hunters (Chasseurs Alpins) and Ardennes hunters(Chasseurs Ardennais). Neumann also made soldiers inspired by the Italian-Abyssianian conflict of 1935. The soldiers had the oval base with broken corners and stamped with the inscription "Fabrication Belge". The similar inscription was also used by Michel Klimov (1905 - 2004) for his early famous Durso soldiers also produced in Liege. The cossacks soldiers were one of the most popular themes in the Neumann toy soldiers product line. Jean-Louis Boussart in his book "Le jouet a Liege de la Belle Epoque aux annes 50" recalls his conversation with Michel Klimov, the Durso company founder (known also as monsieur Durso), about Neumann soldiers. Klimov told him that the pre-war Neumann cossacks were the fruit of the work of Russian White Army immigrants, Neumann workers, living in Liege. The Cossack theme was really dear to them.

The White Army in the Russian Civil War (1918 - 1921)

While resistance to the Red Guard began on the very day after the Bolshevik uprising, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and the instinct of one party rule became a catalyst for the formation of anti-Bolshevik groups both inside and outside Russia, pushing them into action against the new Soviet government. A loose confederation of anti-Bolshevik forces aligned against the Communist government, including landowners, republicans, conservatives, middle-class citizens, reactionaries, pro-monarchists, liberals, army generals, non-Bolshevik socialists who still had grievances and democratic reformists voluntarily united only in their opposition to Bolshevik rule. Their military forces, bolstered by forced conscriptions and terror as well as foreign influence, under the leadership of General Nikolai Yudenich, Admiral Alexander Kolchak and General Anton Denikin, became known as the White movement (sometimes referred to as the "White Army") and controlled significant parts of the former Russian Empire for most of the war.
These plastic soldiers are from different makers including Engineer Basevich, Armies in Plastic and Technolog.

Red Army vs. Green Army (the Russian Civil War)

The Green armies were armed peasant groups which fought against all governments in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922. The Green armies were semi-organized local militias that opposed the Bolsheviks, Whites, and foreign interventionists, and fought to protect their communities from requisitions or reprisals carried out by third parties. The Green armies were politically and ideologically neutral, but at times associated with the Socialist-Revolutionary Party, by far the largest grouping of the Russian Constituent Assembly elected in 1917. The Green armies had at least tacit support throughout much of Russia, however their primary base, the peasantry, were largely reluctant to wage an active campaign during the Russian Civil War and eventually dissolved following Bolshevik victory in 1922. The Green army cossacks are produced by Armies in Plastic and the Red Army cavalry is the new set from Engineer Basevich (Russia).

Red and White tonight ...

The Russian Civil War was to tear Russia apart for three years – between 1918 and 1921. The civil war occurred because after November 1917, many groups had formed that opposed Lenin’s Bolsheviks. These groups included monarchists, militarists, and, for a short time, foreign nations. Collectively, they were known as the Whites while the Bolsheviks were known as the Reds.
My Red and White armies are represented by soldiers from Durso, Engineer Basevich and Armies in Plastic. The photographed artillery is made by Tippco and Hausser in Germany in 30s.

Russian Army at Eastern Front (World War I)

The immediate reason for Russia's involvement in the First World War was a direct result of the decisions made by the statesmen and generals during July 1914. The war in the east began with the Russian invasion of East Prussia on 17 August 1914 and the Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia. The first effort quickly turned to a defeat following the Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914.A second Russian incursion into Galicia was completely successful, with the Russians controlling almost all of that region by the end of 1914, routing four Austrian armies in the process. Under the command of Nikolai Ivanov, Nikolai Ruzsky and Aleksei Brusilov, the Russians won the Battle of Galicia in September and began the Siege of Przemyśl.
Russian WW1 soldiers and cossacks are presented by composite figures from FF Fischer and Elastolin (20s).
