Russo-Japanese War - paper cutout soldier from Boston Globe ( March 27, 1904.)

The Russo - Japanese War developed out of a rivalry between Russia and Japan for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. The war began on February 08, 1904, when the main Japanese fleet launched a surprise attack and siege on the Russian naval squadron at Port Arthur. In August and September 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt served as mediator at a peace conference in Portsmouth, N.H. resulting in the Treaty of Portsmouth. Have a nice weekend !

A young boy with an army of toy soldiers. Process print after Jessie Willcox Smith (1906).
Jessie Willcox Smith (September 6, 1863 – May 3, 1935) was an American illustrator during the Golden Age of American illustration.This illustration was made for the Land of Counterpane by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Land of Counterpane by Robert Louis Stevenson

When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day.

And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.

The Castillo de la Luz (Castle of Light) 16th Century

Located on the southern coast of La Isleta, the Castillo de la Luz (Castle of Light) defended the natural harbour of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for several centuries. Built in 1494 on top of the foundations of an existing fort from the time of the conquest by the Castilians, this solid square-shaped fortress, which was equipped with a platform for 11 cannons, nevertheless suffered severe damages during the invasion of Dutch pirates in 1599 when it was more or less burned to the ground. This model of the Castilo de la Luz is presented at the Columbus House (Casa de ColΓ³n) Museum in Gran Canaria.
