shovels carried on their backs, is a relatively rare variation compared to the

E.J.M. Red Army Cossacks – Made in Mexico π²π½π²π½π²π½π©π©π©
These striking composition figures were produced in the 1930s–40s by Roberto Pro – Juguetes MΓ©xico in CoyoacΓ‘n, Mexico City. His company manufactured toy soldiers of remarkable quality, often compared with the German makers Elastolin and Lineol.
The models typically came in 65mm and 80mm scales, and can be identified by the thick bases inscribed in high relief with: “Juguetes MΓ©xico”, “E.J.M. Made in Mexico” or simply “Made in Mexico”.
Among the most distinctive of his creations are the Red Army Cossacks, depicted here with cavalry and a standard bearer.
A fascinating historical footnote: from January 1937 until his assassination in August 1940, Leon Trotsky and his wife lived in CoyoacΓ‘n – the very neighborhood where these figures were being crafted. It’s an intriguing overlap of political history and toy soldier production.
